A story of women
For centuries, in the Amazigh—or "Berber"—regions of North Africa, women were the guardians of cultural transmission. Through their art, their stories, their language, and also their tattoos, they passed on the culture from generation to generation. These designs, which they etched and inked into their skin, represented who they were: each tattoo had a precise meaning that was passed down orally from mother to daughter.
But the last generations of tattooed Berber women are disappearing, and the meaning of their tattoos is disappearing with them.
At Taszuri, we firmly believe that culture is not destined to disappear. We want to keep it alive within us, to let it shine in our daily lives. We want to save this cultural heritage and keep it alive.
Like Amazigh women, we want to be the bearers of our history.
A story of transmission
When we created Taszuri in 2017, our goal was simple: to keep alive and promote the Amazigh women's tattoos, a cultural heritage that is disappearing.
Along the way, our passion for tattoos took us far beyond: we discovered centuries of oral culture of which women were the guardians.
We have written two books, "Women Go, and Tattoos Tell Their Stories" and "Mediterranean Women," to help you discover the history of Amazigh tattooing, the history of tattooing in the Mediterranean basin, and also the little-known stories of the women who wore these tattoos in the Mediterranean. We also want to share this history through handcrafted objects: ceramics, jewelry, bags, temporary tattoos... Each of our creations bears a symbol, the meaning of which we explain.
Our universe is a journey. An ancient journey, an unexpected journey: it actually takes us to the heart of Amazigh culture to rediscover and share it.
A way to transmit culture and introduce it in a different way.
